Niles OKs shared treasurer services

Staff report

NILES — The Niles Board of Education approved its half of an agreement to share treasurer services with Brookfield Local Schools.

Mary Ann McMahon, board president, said in a special meeting Thursday that the move to share current Brookfield Treasurer Craig Yaniglos came in response to a mandate from the Financial Planning Supervision Commission, which is overseeing Niles City Schools while the district is in state-mandated fiscal emergency.

Niles schools Treasurer Lori Hudzik has been on “unrequested leave” since July. Trumbull County Educational Service Center Treasurer Lori Simione has been working as the treasurer pro tempore on an as needed basis at $300 per day, but her service to the district is set to end Monday. Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen said Simione worked on average 2.5 days per week for the district.

The approved contract for shared services is effective through July 2020. It is expected to save the Niles district an estimated $10,000 over the course of the contract, Thigpen said.
