Mathews accepts Rachel’s Challenge

VIENNA — After the death of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine shooting, her family quickly learned about the positive impact she had on people around her.

Through personal stories and entries found in Scott’s journals, her family was motivated to develop what has become one of the largest intervention programs in the United States.

On Monday, students at Mathews High School will learn Scott’s and be challenged to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion. After the presentation, about 40 students at the junior and senior high schools will act as leaders of change within the building.

A 6 p.m. Monday public assembly will take place in the high school gymnasium. Due to the nature of the discussions, it is recommended that parents only bring children who are age 13 and older.
