Campaign shows excess expenses

WARREN — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan spent more than he raised on his presidential bid between July and October, including 88 hotel stays and a number of big payouts — including to his campaign manager.

The Ryan campaign paid $46,849.45 to Michael Morley, his campaign manager, with the money going to “legal consulting and expenses,” according to the candidate’s finance report filed with the Federal Election Commission.

The campaign also paid $69,037.50 to New Blue Interactive LLC, a Washington, D.C., firm, with $40,000 of it going for “media strategy services” and the rest for online advertising.

Overall, Ryan, D-Howland, reported spending $602,440.41 in the third quarter. That is more than the $425,731.01 he raised between July and September.

He raised the 17th least amount of money in the third quarter among the active Democratic presidential candidates, and significantly less than the other challengers as well as two who quit the race in August. Only ex-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak of Pennsylvania raised less than Ryan in that time period.

Ryan spent a lot of money on travel.

He was often in Iowa, which has the nation’s first Democratic presidential caucus on Feb. 3.

During the third quarter, Ryan listed 12 hotel stays in Des Moines, three each in Sioux City, Cedar Falls and Anamosa, and two each in Davenport and Council Bluff.

He also listed eight hotel stays in Manchester, N.H., and two in Tilton, N.H. New Hampshire has the nation’s first presidential primary on Feb. 11.

Ryan spent time campaigning in South Carolina, where the nation’s second presidential primary will be on Feb. 29.

He listed six hotel stays in Greenville, three in Charleston and two in Myrtle Beach.

Ryan didn’t visit Nevada, which has the nation’s second presidential caucus on Feb. 22, during the third quarter.

Besides Des Moines, Ryan had the most hotel stays in Allen Park, Mich., a Detroit suburb. He stayed there 11 times in the third quarter.

He also had seven stays each in New York City and Boston. He had multiple hotel expenses in Dayton, Columbus, Miami, Augusta, Ga.; San Francisco; and Charlotte, N.C.

Among his other major expenses were $17,419.35 to Harta Communications of Washington, D.C., for campaign consulting; $17,000 to Balodis Group LLC of Westlake for fundraising consulting; $16,278.29 to Michael Zetts, his congressional communications director and a senior adviser to his presidential campaign, for campaign consulting and expenses; $15,000 to Stefanie Cruz of Arlington, Va., for digital strategic consulting; and $12,784.50 to Forty Two Event Productions of Boardman for rally equipment and setup, presumably for his downtown Youngstown rally on April 6.

Ryan is also apparently a fan of iTunes as his campaign spent $117.03 for the service on Aug. 12 and $21.27 on Sept. 11, according to his FEC report.

During the third quarter, Ryan received maximum $2,800 contributions from about 20 individuals and four political campaign funds. The maximum donations from the campaign funds are for Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh, Summit County fiscal officer Kristen M. Scalise and Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Walters.
