Vehicle strikes bicycling teacher

LORDSTOWN — A Lordstown High School teacher was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning while bicycling to school.

Jenna Barvitski, 33, the high school’s music and choir teacher, was struck shortly after 7 a.m. in the 1900 block of Carson Salt Springs Road, according to village police Capt. Chris Bordonaro.

Barvitski was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, but information about her condition was not released. A crash investigation is continuing.

The woman’s bicycle was seen lying on the ground, and a minivan was stopped at the scene, said Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN 27.

Schools Superintendent Terry Armstrong said some children saw the accident. He also released a statement regarding the situation.

“Lordstown Local Schools confirms that one of our teachers was struck on a bicycle on the way to the school this morning,” Armstrong said. “Our entire school community’s thoughts are with the teacher and her family. As a district, we have counselors available for our students and staff. Our teaching staff are there for our students’ needs as well.”
