Tentative accord in McDonald

McDONALD — After a seven-hour negotiation session this week, the McDonald Board of Education has reached a tentative agreement with the district’s teachers union on their next contract.

Superintendent Kevin O’Connell said Thursday both sides met with a mediator Wednesday for seven hours until the agreement was reached. He said the teachers will next review the proposed agreement and members of the McDonald Education Association, which represents 55 teachers, will vote on the pact before the board takes further action.

O’Connell said a special meeting likely will be held before the end of the month to approve the contract.

The board and union agreed to call in a federal mediator last month when the contract expired Aug. 31. Nearly 200 people attended a Sept. 11 board meeting, with many voicing concerns that a contract had not been reached.
