Driver damages Niles storefront

NILES — A driver attempting to flee from police crashed into a pole in front of Treasures Flea Market and Vernon’s Prime time, damaging the plaza awning and sending one person to the hospital, according to a police report.

The driver of the car was outside Madden’s Bar and Grille playing music loudly around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the report states. When an officer approached, the driver left the parking lot but returned to the other side of the lot near Handel’s and continued to play music.

The officer approached again, and the driver tried to flee but struck a Ford Mustang and then crashed into the awning at the flea market.

One person was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

The owner of the building estimates repair costs for the awning at $10,000 to $12,000, and said the driver of the vehicle did not have insurance.
