On the record – Champion

WHAT: Township trustee special meeting / workshop Thursday

PRESENT: Brian Bugos, Rex Fee and Doug Emerine

• Approved Chagrin Valley Paving of Chagrin Falls at $117,831 for paving streets in the Rolling Meadows development, including Jonathan Lane, Meadowview Circle, Livingston Circle and Ridge Road from state Route 45 to the bend in the road. Plans are to also have Downs Road paved this summer;

• Discussed plans to post signs at the township-owned Central School property stating the hours the property will open and that it closes at dusk, and prohibiting pets at the site except service dogs;

• Voted 2-1 to set mosquito spraying with Alexander Pest Control for the evenings of July 29 and Aug. 26 with rain dates the following evenings. Cost is $210 per hour for eight to nine hours of spraying not to exceed $2,900. Officials said they have a list of properties not to be sprayed. Residents who want to be added to the no spray list, such as beekeepers, should call 330-847-8915. Bugos said there was a mosquito found in the township in 2018 with West Nile virus. Plans are to spray the bike trail where there have been many mosquitoes. Fee, who voted “no,” said there was no grant money available for the spraying and considered the spraying “a two-day fix” as some neighboring townships do not spray and mosquitoes will come from there into Champion;

• Reported larvicide is still available for residents at the Trumbull County Health Department to address mosquitoes;

• Discussed cellphone costs for township employees. Bugos said he will contact Verizon and Spectrum about rates, aiming to keep costs under $250 per month. Their current rate with 3G Phones at $243 per month for 13 cellphones ends in December;

• Will be seeking a replacement for Road Supervisor Chris Connelly, who is retiring Oct. 1;

• Met with department heads on health care costs with officials looking at ways to reduce costs by bidding for health insurance.
