Fire destroys tractor-trailer

Damages two other trucks

WEATHERSFIELD — A semi tractor-trailer caught fire at the Petro Truck Stop on Salt Springs Road around 4 a.m. Tuesday, destroying it and damaging two others parked nearby.

The fire department said a second truck sustained heavy damage and a third sustained minor damage. No one was injured in the blaze.

Weathersfield and McDonald fire departments responded to a call from someone passing by the truck stop saying there was a large fire in the rear parking area.

“The driver of the truck from which the fire began said he was from California,” said Weathersfield fire Capt. Tom Lambert. “The truck was hauling paper products.”

Lambert said the driver filled up his gas tank before lying down in his cab to get some sleep. Another truck driver knocked on the cab window to wake him up after he saw the flames, Lambert said.

“The truck’s owner described being inside of its cab when he smelled something burning,” Lambert said. “He had a refrigerator, microwave, television set and other items to make the road comfortable.”

The fire started in the cab of the truck and spread to the rear trailer area.

“We were able to dyke up the fuel spill, before it spread to other areas of the Petro station,” Lambert said.

Fire officials left the scene around 6 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
