Vernon proceeds with replacement levy

VERNON — Township trustees on Tuesday gave final reading to place a continuous fire replacement levy on the November ballot that if passed will replace a 3-mill fire levy that has been in place since 2007.

Trustee Chairman Walter Emrick said the replacement levy will bring the levy up to current valuation and raise approximately $83,000 annually for day-to-day needs of the fire department.

Emrick and trustee Walter Horodyski voted for the levy to be placed on the ballot. Emrick said trustee Richard Heberling was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting but approved first reading of the motion at the May meeting.

In another matter, trustees heard from residents of heavy rainfall that has damaged roads.

“There has been so much rain that has fallen this past month. In two days, we had four inches of rain that washed away some of the road surface,” Emrick said.

He said sections of the township have a lot of hills where there is flooding.

Trustees approved having extensive road repair done to Hanes South Road totaling $28,000 with Matteyko Excavating in Fowler to do the ditch cleaning work and the county to do the patching and sealing work.
