New plaques honor 9 tornado victims

NILES — Two new plaques memorializing the nine people who died in the 1985 tornado were dedicated Friday on the 34th anniversary of the deadly event.

The memorial was put up by Ralph Delserone, owner of Rapehael’s Beauty School at the Niles Park Plaza, which was destroyed in the tornado.

Names on the plaque are Evelyn Simmons, Denise Mazza, Elaine Italiano, Linda McMahon, Helen Thomas, Emma Yannucci, Ernest and Anna Miller and Margaret Palkovich.

The ceremony was 10 a.m. by the Raphael’s pylon sign in the parking lot. The new memorial replaces an older one that was in poor condition and did not include names or information on the tornado.
