MetroParks board members stress levy need

WARREN — Trumbull County MetroParks board members came to the Mahoning River Paddlefest event at Canoe City Metro Park on Saturday to educate residents about a 0.6-mill levy planned for the November ballot.

The park board has a $95,000 budget to cover more than 2,000 acres of park, but said that isn’t enough to maintain the parks. To help the parks financially, the board already cut 18 percent of its spending in the last two years and has closed the North Road Nature Preserve.

“We need to preserve our natural resources. This is a quality of life issue. We have to maintain and improve the parks,” board member Nicolette Darkangelo said.

She said 14.6 miles of the bike trail need to be repaved and there are six other properties that need improved. She also said this funding also would help increase programming throughout the MetroParks system.

The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home approximately $21 per year.
