Accused armed robber nabbed

HOWLAND — An armed robber’s getaway was short lived Tuesday afternoon when he was in handcuffs within 15 minutes of the initial call, according to a Trumbull County 911 call log.

Ryan Rulong, 27, of Sandpiper Trail, Warren, was booked into the Trumbull County Jail just after 7 p.m. on a charge of aggravated robbery, jail records show. The robbery occurred at 3:30 p.m. at the True North gas station at East Market Street and North Road in Howland.

A police report states a white man wearing a black baseball cap and black mask and carrying a gun robbed the store and fled toward state Route 82 in a white Ford F-150 pickup truck with multiple stripes on the hood and license plates covered in purple paint. About four minutes later, Howland police pulled over a truck matching that description on state Route 11 south near the Tibbetts Wick Road exit, the report states.

The driver, later identified as Rulong, surrendered by putting his hands out the driver’s side window as police held him at gunpoint, the report states. He was threatening to commit suicide and was taken to Trumbull Regional Medical Center for evaluation before being taken to the jail.

He is expected to be arraigned today in Warren Municipal Court.
