Blaze kills two sows and 12 piglets

WEATHERSFIELD — Two sows and 12 piglets were killed in a metal pole barn fire Tuesday morning at 102 Welsh Hill Road.

The fire was in a structure near the corner of West Liberty Street and Welsh Hill Road.

“One of the sows was pregnant,” Weathersfield fire Capt. Thomas Lambert said.

“The cause of the fire has not been determined,” Lambert said. “We have contacted the State Fire Marshal’s office to do an investigation and make the determination.”

The structure was significantly damaged.

Guy Hassen, the property owner, said the pole barn already was on fire when he arrived. A neighbor who saw the blaze reported the fire.

Hassen provides pigs for area 4-H clubs. One of the piglets was supposed to be sold to a 4-H member.

Firefighters contained the fire to the pole barn area. No other animals were harmed and no injuries were reported.

Weathersfield Fire Department received aid from the Austintown and McDonald fire departments.

The owner estimates more than $10,000 in damages, including the building, hogs and feed for the animals.
