WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: Jim Scher, David Mahan, John Pitts, Patricia Fisher and Kelly Boyle

The board:

• Approved the high school robotics team competing March 28 to 30 at the Buckeye Regional Robotics competition in Cleveland. The team competed March 12 to 17 at the St. Louis Regional Robotics competition in St. Louis, Mo. Team adviser Mark McCall said the team earned the Entepreneurship Award, had three wins, six losses and one tie with a new robot drive team this year;

• Heard from Central Elementary Principal Alexandra Nannicola the school’s kindergarten team has been nominated to be featured at the 2019 Ohio School Board Association student achievement fair at the capital conference in November. The team will present “Coding in Kinder.”

• Recognized fifth-grade science teacher David Murduck for receiving the Environmental Education Council of Ohio’s Educator of the Year Award. Murduck is among 100 state-certified environmental educators;

• Heard from eighth-grade science teacher Joseph Harris of plans for a STEM summer camp June 3-7;

• Inducted the Champion Central Elementary staff, Champion Middle School staff and Murduck into the Champion Employee Hall of Fame recognizing their exemplary achievements and accomplishments, including recent state recognitions;

• Recognized Treasurer Laurena Rouan for a perfect audit for fiscal year 2018 with the state presenting the Auditor of State Award;

• Recognized fourth-graders Talyia Sandor, Kinsey Rednock, Chloe Gilbert and Zoe Palette for their student-run business “Looms for Kids” with proceeds donated to local charities;

• Announced the “Let’s Play Ball” event to open the new schools’ sports fields will be 4:30 p.m. March 28 at the softball field;

• Announced the ninth annual Swing into Spring dinner theater and Champion Rotary Club Senior Artist of the Year award program will be 5 p.m. April 4 at high school with reservations required.
