Champion promotes principal

Grabowski appointed to superintendent beginning 2019-2020 school year

CHAMPION — The Champion Board of Education on Monday approved promoting high school principal John Grabowski to superintendent of the school district.

The board approved a three-year, 260-day contract for Grabowski, effective Aug. 1, to fill the opening with the retirement of Superintendent Pamela Hood, who leaves her post July 31 after 25 years in Champion.

Grabowski will be paid $109,314 in the first year of the contract and his pay will increase to $114,359 in the 2021-22 school year.

Grabowski of Aurora has been with the district since 2002 and served as high school principal for the past six years. He previously was Champion’s director of technology for two years and a high school science teacher for nine years. He also taught in Barberton City School district.

“I look forward to this opportunity to continue serving the district and also this board as superintendent. I am very glad to have this opportunity and to take on new challenges,” he said.

Board of Education President John Pitts said Grabowski was selected from 15 applicants.

“We felt he was the most qualified and the best person for the superintendent position,” Pitts said, noting Grabowski’s move up the ranks within the district.

The board Monday also approved promoting current assistant high school principal Tracy Herrholtz to high school principal, effective Aug. 1, on a three-year, 219-day contract. She has served as assistant high school principal for four years.

She will be paid $97,752 for the 2019-20 school year and her pay will increase to $101,136 by the third-year of the contract.

Herrholtz of Howland previously was an assistant principal and English teacher for Austintown Fitch High School.

“I thank you for this opportunity. I’m elated and excited to continue serving Champion schools in this capacity,” she said.
