Murder trial date set for baby’s dad
YOUNGSTOWN — An Austintown man accused of killing his infant daughter has a trial date March 18, according to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court records.
Christian Sumpter, 24, 327 N. Roanoke Ave., was indicted Sept. 18 on charges of aggravated murder, two counts of murder and child endangering. He is accused of dropping his 5-month old daughter on her head Sept. 2.
At the time of his arrest, Sumpter told police he was tossing the baby in the air when he yawned and lost control of her, Austintown police Chief Bob Gavalier said. The father told police the baby then fell and hit his knee and a coffee table, police reports stated.
The infant was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman, then flown by medical helicopter to the main Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, where she was pronounced dead. The Summit County Medical Examiner later ruled the death a homicide.
