Local fire departments awarded state grants

WARREN — Fire departments in Champion and Kinsman have been awarded grants from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation to help protect them from carcinogens and other hazards encountered by firefighters.

Champion received $14,730 to purchase a diesel exhaust system and Kinsman, $7,656 to buy 44 gloves and 44 hoods. Struthers in Mahoning County received $5,222 to buy 34 hoods and 34 gloves, and Paris Township, which is just west of Newton Falls, received $12,763 to buy an extractor.

The grant program helps departments buy safety gear, exhaust systems and specialized washing machines.
