Court denies appeal of child rapist

WARREN — An appeals court upheld the conviction of a man sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after a Trumbull County jury found him guilty of two counts of rape and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to an opinion issued by the court. Craig S. Gillette, 30, was found guilty and sentenced in 2017 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. The victim was 12 and 13 when the assaults happened. On appeal, Gillette argued the court put too much faith in expert testimony, the dates of offense were overly vague, his statements made to police should have been suppressed and the jury convicted him without enough evidence. Eleventh District Court of Appeals Judge Thomas R. Wright found his arguments were without merit.
