Weathersfield to address parking issues

WEATHERSFIELD — After residents voiced concern about vehicles parked on narrow roads and making it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through, township trustees said they are prepared to deal with any parking problems.

Trustees at their meeting Tuesday approved having vehicle parking regulations in place to control vehicles parking in unincorporated areas of the community.

Trustee Steve Gerberry said the Ohio Revised Code allows township police to issue parking fines for criminal offenses and violations. Trustee Chairman Gil Blair said trustees wanted to have the resolution in place in case there are problems.

“We have some roads that are very narrow with problems of police and other safety vehicles getting through because cars are parked on the roads. This will give police another available tool,” he said.

Blair said police can cite violators when necessary.

Trustees also on Tuesday presented their annual community leadership award to the late Randall Pugh for his years of service as township fire chief. He began serving with the fire department in 1977. He was fire chief since 1998 until his death at age 58 in April. A bridge on Austintown-Warren Road will be dedicated 5:30 p.m. Monday to honor Pugh.

Also presented an award was Rusty Garland for 35 years of service cleaning the township hall.

The awards are presented to individuals who have helped the community through their leadership, work or involvement.

In other business, trustees:

• Approved entering into an agreement with Niles for maintenance responsibility of the Niles leg of the Greenway Bike Trail, which is in both communities. The township will cover the path from the Mahoning-Trumbull border to Salt Springs-Youngstown Road;

• Announced a community workday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today along Warren Avenue with township officials, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership and the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber taking part;

• Presented a donation of a grave and footer for James Bobovnyk, a Korean War MIA veteran, in Kerr Cemetery. A marker will be placed on Veterans Day for Bobovnyk, with plans to have his remains returned for interment.

• Approved assisting with the preparation for the Oktoberfest 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Oct. 13 in conjunction with the Weathersfield Local School District’s Spirit Day parade at 10 a.m. and girls powder-puff game at 11 a.m. The event includes a haunted history walk, music and food;

• Set trick-or-treat 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31.
