BROOKFIELD — One person died when a truck crashed into a utility pole Tuesday afternoon.

Thomas Stefek Jr., 48, of Poland, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on state Route 7 south of Cherry Street just after 3 p.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Stefek was driving a Ford F-550 south on Route 7 when he went left of center and hit a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Lawrence Gerdy, 79, of Hermitage, Pa., who wasn’t injured during the crash. Stefek’s vehicle then went off the left side of the road and hit a utility pole.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and a portion of state Route 7 was closed between state Route 82 and Route 62 until after 11 p.m.
