ODOT worker killed on I-680
YOUNGSTOWN — A worker for the Ohio Department of Transportation was killed Thursday in a crash on Interstate 680.
The accident, which happened just after 12:30 p.m., involved one sport utility vehicle and one worker, according to Youngstown police Lt. Brian Welsh. It happened at the Market Street overpass in the southbound lane, Welsh said.
The driver of the SUV, who was taken to a hospital with injuries, drifted into a work zone on the right side of the road, hitting the worker, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN-27.
An ODOT spokesperson deferred any questions to Youngstown police. ODOT District 4 Deputy Director John Picuri said in a prepared statement that ODOT is “deeply saddened by the death of a member of our ODOT family.”
“Ohio lost a hard-working public servant who will be truly missed,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones tonight.”
From 2011 to 2015, 609 workers died from injuries at road work zones in the United States, including 19 in Ohio, according to information from the United States Department of Labor Statistics. About 46 percent of these workers were killed in pedestrian-vehicular incidents, which include being struck by a vehicle or mobile equipment, according to the BLS.
The crash remains under investigation, Welsh said. Names of those involved weren’t immediately released.
