Boat ignites, sends man to hospital

A fire started around 3 p.m. Thursday outside of 2405 Kenwood Ave. SE, when a boat ignited, sending a man who was working on it in the drive way to the hospital with second-degree burns.

WARREN — A man who was working on a boat in his driveway just before 3 p.m. Thursday was hospitalized with second-degree burns when it ignited, according to a Warren fire assistant chief.

Larry Bishop, 42, was taken by ambulance to Trumbull Memorial Hospital from the 2405 Kenwood Ave. SW home, according to a 911 call summary.

Assistant fire Chief Steve Williams said Bishop’s burns were “bad” and covered his arms and face.

It appears Bishop was working on the boat in the driveway when a fire ignited,Williams said. It is too early to know how the fire started, but there was probably gasoline in the tank, Williams said.

The fire did not spread into the house, but damaged the carport and its contents, Williams said.

A neighboring house also was damaged.

Three engines from Warren responded, and firefighters had the blaze under control quickly, Williams said.

Officers from Warren police also were at the scene and blocked Jackson Street SW and Kenwood Avenue SW while crews put out the blaze.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and saw flames shooting out, the call summary states.

Two or three people who were in the home got out safely, Williams said.
