Mon. 3 p.m.: Man sentenced in child rape case

YOUNGSTOWN – Jeffrey Palmer, 34, who was convicted last week at trial of repeatedly raping a girl, 10, in her Boardman apartment while serving as her babysitter, was apparently sentenced to 80 years to life today.

Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court said she was giving Palmer a 20-years-to life sentence four times, each sentence running one after the other.

Some court onlookers questioned whether that was what she intended because of the way she worded it. An attempt to clarify it with the judge’s staff and the attorneys was unsuccessful.

Palmer, originally from Cleveland, who was living with the girl, her mother and her siblings for a year, asked the judge before learning his sentence to be treated “as a human.”
