Tue. 8:20 p.m.: Mercy coming to Eastwood?

NILES – A public notice from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reveals the Cafaro Company has applied for permission to clear out an area of its sprawling Eastwood Mall Complex to make way for new development.

According to the notice, the company is looking to fill in portions of wetlands to make way for further construction, while taking steps to lessen the impact of new development on the area’s aquatic resources. The purpose of the development, according to the notice, is to construct a medical office building, a medical education center, an assisted living and memory care facility, an office building, a mid-rise apartment building, a doctor’s office building, and an additional building for Mercy Health’s St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

Mercy Health has been in talks with the Cafaro Company for nearly two years about placing a facility on the Cafaro Company complex. Despite the length of the talks, a spokesman for Mercy Health said discussions remain preliminary.
