Seeing Eye: Group celebrating river with festival

RIVERFEST: The Friends of the Mahoning River will host a Riverfest 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Packard Park, Mahoning Avenue, Warren. The event celebrates the revitalization and conservation of the river. The family-friendly event is free to the public and includes a kayak race on the Mahoning River, hands-on activities, educational demonstrations, food trucks, live music and entertainment.

McDONALD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION: The McDonald High School Alumni Association will host its annual dinner and meeting at 6 p.m. July 5 at Ciminero’s Banquet Center in Niles. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 7 p.m. Alumni of Class of 1965 and 1975 are encouraging classmates to celebrate 60 and 50 years. GIRARD PROGRAM: The Girard Free Library is offering a program on ceramic animals for teens at 3 p.m. today. Materials will be provided. For information, call 330-545-2508.

An all-day scavenger hunt for children ages 6 to 11 will be Tuesday.

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER: A community fundraiser to raise money for police dog armor will be noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Penguin City Brewing Company on East Federal Street in downtown Youngstown. The event is organized by Aunt Mimi’s Lemonade Stand, Annalise Kenyon, 11, and Jordan Kenyon, 8, in honor of their aunt Amy Kenyon-Bowman and her love of animals. Money will be raised for supplying body armor for police dogs. Seventeen dogs in the area need bulletproof vests, which cost between $800 and $1,000 each. The event will include food trucks, SWAT trucks and police dog demonstrations. Donations can be made through Paypal at MKenyon1982@gmail.com.

The past four years, the lemonade stand has benefitted Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County in Vienna ($2,009 raised), Melina Michelle Edenfield Foundation ($600 raised) and Veterans Outreach in Liberty ($500 raised).

Organizers said $1,950 already has been raised and one vest has been donated.

SUMMER SOLSTICE: Unity Church Centre, 1226 Naylor Lloyd Road, Liberty, will host a drumming session, Drums and Yums, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday for its summer solstice drumming circle. Participants may bring their own drums or drums will be provided. The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Call 330-539-0122.
