Seeing Eye: Library to mark tornado anniversary

1985 TORNADO PRESENTATION: The Warren Trumbull County Public Library will host a 40th anniversary of the 1985 tornado at 2 p.m. Saturday at the library. The free presentation will include Dr. Gregory S. Forbes, a former severe weather expert with The Weather Channel, and Jennifer Narramore, owner of Tornado Talk, who will present an in-depth look into the destructive tornado that affected the region in 1985. Local photos of the tornado and its aftermath will be on display. The Tornado Talk group and staff from the Local History and Genealogy Center of the library will share additional information at resource tables. Forbes was involved in the damage surgery as part of the survey team with the NWS and share his firsthand experience of the aftermath. Narramore will pay tribute to the lives lost, recognize the heroes, and reflect on the resilience of the affected communities.

GREETING CARD CLASS: Girard Multigenerational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave., will host a greeting card class 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Seating is limited.

HEALTH FAIR: A natural health fair and silent auction to support the American Red Cross will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fitworks Fitness next to Niles Staples off Route 422. The free health fair will include relaxing techniques, networking and other activities. The $25 treatments include acupuncture, chiropractic and massage.

GOLF OUTING: The Vienna Historical Society will hold its annual golf outing June 8 at Bronzwood Golf Club in Kinsman, Registration is 7:30 to 8:15 a.m., with tee off at 8:30 a.m. The format is a four-person scramble. Lunch and dinner will be provided. Cost is $75 per person or $300 per team. Volunteers are being sought for the event. There will be a basket raffle. Baskets can be brought to the Copper Penny Lodge in Vienna on Tuesday.

TEEN EVENT: Teen Scene will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday for ages 12 to 18 at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles. Create small bombs of composts, soil and native seeds Supplies will be provided. Register at 330-652-1704, ext. 4

ALL ABOUT AI: Oak Hill Collaborative is excited to offer a free workshop dedicated to instructing residents how to use AI for personal and professional development. The All About AI Workshop will be hosted by Trumbull Career and Technical Center at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Guests should enter through the Adult Learning Center’s Door B of TCTC, located at 528 Educational Highway, Warren. Registration is required.

The two-hour workshop is designed to instruct participants on how to use AI to refine information and documents such as resumes, as well as showcase AI image creation tools. The workshop will be split into two parts, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience with these tools as well as gain informational advice.

HISTORY NIGHT: The Leavittburg Heritage Association will host History Night at the Museum at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the museum, 4901 W Market St. Speaker will be Stacey Hoover who will share about her family businesses, Cockeye BBQ, Cockeye Creamery and Franky’s Pizza and Delicatessen. The event is free and open to the public.

NURSE SCHOLARSHIP: The Youngstown Area Jewish Foundation is accepting applications for its Mildred Engel Nurse Scholarship.

The scholarship provides financial assistance to individuals working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing. Recipients must reside within a 60 mile radius of the Youngstown area. The scholarship award may cover tuition and transportation costs up to $10,000 annually. Visit yajfoundation.org/scholarships for an application.

Recipients must commit to working at least three shifts a month as an STNA, LPN, or RN (associate) at Heritage Manor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation while pursuing their degree or elect to work for Heritage Manor after receiving their RN license. Those without the necessary credentials are still eligible to apply. Heritage Manor will support their STNA training. Interested individuals must be accepted into an accredited RN nursing program.

SUVCW CEREMONY: Camp Isaac Eaton Number 504 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War of Mercer, Pa., will be conducting a ceremony at 6 p.m. May 30 to honor Edwin Ayers, the last Union veteran of the Civil War to be buried in Lawrence County at Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski, Pa.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a 501c3 nonprofit, fraternal, patriotic and educational organization, instituted to carry on the work of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), which was the largest Union Civil War veterans’ organization.

Prior to disbanding and before the death of its last member, the GAR officially designated the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War as its successor and heir to its remaining property. The SUVCW is officially recognized as the GAR’s legal successor, receiving its Congressional Charter in 1954 (Public Law 605).
