Sweet treats raise funds for shelter

FUNDRAISER FOR SHELTER: The 21st annual Dinner and Desserts fundraiser to benefit Someplace Safe will be 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Eastwood Event Centre in Niles. Someplace Safe is Trumbull County’s only domestic violence shelter and resource center. All proceeds benefit shelter, support and legal advocacy for domestic violence survivors in Trumbull County. Desserts also will be available to sample and purchase at the very start of the event.

TEEN SCENE: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host Teen Scene 3:30 p.m. Thursday for teens ages 12 to 18. Teens will learn about classic myths and bring them to life in their own classic stories. All supplies and tools, as well as pizza, will be provided. Registration is needed at 330-652-1704 ext. 4.

NIGHT AT RACES: The Girard FIRST Robotics Robocats Booster Club will host a Night at the Races March 15 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, South State Street. Girard. The event is free with doors open at 6 p.m. and races starting at 7 p.m. The event proceeds benefit FIRST Robotics and LEGO League. There will be a 50-50, auction race and basket raffle. Horses can be purchased at $10. The Robocats teams have been working since early January on their robot for this season the theme of the competition is “Reefscape.”

AAUW SCHOLARSHIP: American Association of University Women (AAUW) Trumbull County Chapter will grant a $1,000 scholarship to a qualifying female student for the 2025-26 school year. Applicants must be a resident of Trumbull County, full-time high school student, enrolled in a STEM or STEAM program and be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college or university located in Ohio.

HOLOCAUST CONTEST: The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is inviting students in grades 7 to 12 in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties a chance to enter its annual Holocaust Writing, Art and Multimedia contest. The annual contest is held in conjunction with Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), an internationally recognized day to be commemorated April 24, which is set aside for remembering all victims of the Holocaust and for reminding society of what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and indifference reign.

The theme for the 2025 contest is “Auschwitz – A Place on Earth.” All entries, whether writing, art or media, must be accompanied by a title page or label containing the following information: student’s name, home address and telephone number; student’s school name, address, and telephone number; teacher’s name; and grade.

The deadline is March 28. Submit submissions via email to Nancy Sentelik at the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, nsentelik@jewishyoungstown.org. Presentation of contest awards will be made during the Yom Hashoah Community Commemoration at noon April 29 at the Mahoning County Courthouse. All are also invited to the Shoah Memorial Service 4 p.m. April 27 at the Jewish Community Center.
