Library marks Presidents Day

The seeing eye

PRESIDENTS DAY: A Presidents Day celebration will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the National McKinley Birthplace Museum in Niles. Museum director Belinda Weiss will discuss the history of Presidents Day at 3 p.m. Trivia and light refreshments will be provided.

OPEN HOUSE: A Presidents Day open house will be 1 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the McKinley Birthplace Home. The home is a replica of the home of Wiliam McKInley, the 25th president of the United States, who was born in Niles.

VALENTINE’S EVENING: Grace AME Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW, Warren, will host a Valentine’s Evening with Friends and Jazz 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday. Cost is $40. For tickets, call 330-394-6270.

SCAVENGER HUNT: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host a “Love is in the Air” scavenger hunt at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The program is designed for teens. Participants can earn chocolate candy and other sweet surprises.

SOCIETY TO MEET: Trumbull County Genealogical Society will meet 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Grand Room of the WarrenTrumbull County Public Library. The program will be presented by Jim Tallman, who will discuss how the Lincoln, Lee and Boone families are all connected to his family.

FRUIT SALE: Hubbard Rotary Club is having a fruit sale with California navel oranges and Florida grapefruits. Orders need to be placed by Feb. 17 and can be picked up 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 22 at Repair That Glass, 770 Main St., Hubbard. Proceeds benefit the Hubbard Rotary van, which is used to transport local senior citizens. Checks should be made out to Hubbard Rotary, P. O. Box 232, Hubbard, OH 44425.

ANNUAL CONTEST: The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is inviting students in grades 7 to 12 in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, and Western Pennsylvania to enter its annual Holocaust Writing, Art and MultiMedia contest.

This annual contest is held in conjunction with Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), an internationally recognized day to be commemorated April 24. The theme for the 2025 contest is “Auschwitz — A Place on Earth.” The title comes from a 16-panel exhibit from Yad Vashem titled “Auschwitz – A Place on Earth: The Auschwitz Album.” The Auschwitz Album is the only surviving visual evidence of the process leading to mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The Auschwitz exhibit, which will be on display at the Jewish Community Center in the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Art Gallery from April 23-30 and includes photographs from 1944 depicting the arrival of Hungarian Jews from Carpatho-Ruthenia. The exhibit is free.

Contest submissions must relate to the genocide of Jews at Auschwitz or any other extermination camp. The deadline is March 28.

Presentation of contest awards will be made during the Yom Hashoah Community Commemoration at noon April 29 at the Mahoning County Courthouse. All are also invited to the Shoah Memorial Service 4 p.m. April 27 at the Jewish Community Center.
