Holiday festivities coming to downtown Warren

HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS: The Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County will host the fourth annual Hometown Holidays Celebration 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in and around downtown Warren. Anyone interested in having their business, organization or club in the parade can register by sending a text to Rachel at 234-600-8365. Marching bands are also are invited to participate.

The event will include a holiday parade, meet and greet with Santa Claus, ice sculptures, light show, horse carriage rides, holiday crafts and music. The annual tree lighting in Courthouse Square also will take place.

McKINLEY CELEBRATION: The McKinley Birthplace Museum, McKinley Library, Niles Historical Society and Von Isley Estate will host a holiday celebration for families noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the four locations. Santa Claus will greet children at the event. Transportation will be provided to the different locations.

TRIVIA NIGHT: The National McKinley Birthplace Museum in Niles will host a Christmas trivia night 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Participants will test their knowledge of Christmas traditions, folklore, carols and movies. People can wear ugly holiday sweaters. Registration is required

CALENDAR PARTY: The Friends of the Girard Library will host its calendar party at 6 p.m. Thursday in the community room of the library. Tickets for the event are $10 and are on sale at the library circulation desk. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Price of ticket includes a meal and drawing of door prize and table prizes. There will be a raffle of gift baskets.

COOKING CLUB: The McKinley Memorial Library will host the Cookbook Club 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Cookbooks fans are invited to discuss new cookbooks on the second Wednesday of the month at the McKinley Birthplace replica home. This month, participants will read “The Perfect Cookie” by America’s Test Kitchen.

GUEST SPEAKER: Girard Free Library will host Doug Fowler, a former Youngstown State University adjunct professor, at 6 p.m. Tuesday who will present “Apollo 8 Earthrise,” which is about the first orbit of the moon on Christmas Eve 1968. Astronaut Bill Anders took a photo of the Earth rising over the moon’s horizon. Registration is needed by calling 330-545-2508.

FRIENDLY SQUARES: The Friendly Squares will host a Christmas dinner dance starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Niles SCOPE Senior Center, 14 E. State St., Niles. Square dancing follows dinner at 7:30 p.m.

HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD: The McKinley Memorial Library in Nles will present Holidays Around the World at 6 p.m. Thursday for children ages 5 to 11. Children will learn about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas and will make a holiday tealight holder. Registration is required at 330-652-1704, ext 4.

SPRINKLE KINDNESS: Sprinkle Kindness Thrifts and Gifts, 5000 E. Market St., Howland, across from Up a Creek, will host a Christmas event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with children’s crafts and coloring activities, raffle baskets, gift wrapping and visits with Santa Claus.

COCOA AND CANVAS: The Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, is offering cocoa and canvas 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Participants will enjoy cocoa and donuts as they create a painting. Registration is required at jccyoungstown.org / visual arts. Cost is $18 for members and $24 for nonmembers.

GIFT CERTIFICATES: The Tri-State Detachment Marine Corps League 494, VFW Austintown 4237 and VFW Hubbard 3767, in cooperation with Sparkle Market in Cornersburg, will give away 300 $50 Sparkle gift certificates to all military veterans starting 10 a.m. Sunday. Veterans must be present and have proof of eligibility. Certificates can be used at Sparkle Markets in Boardman, Youngstown and other Valley locations.
