First Lady’s gown collection
Seeing Eye
GOWN COLLECTION: The Niles Historical Society sponsored a campaign in 2024 to raise funds to restore the First Lady’s gown collection that was created for the American Bicentennial Celebration of 1976. The gowns are being restored and cleaned and will be rotated in displays at the Ward-Thomas House, 503 Brown St., Niles, home of the Niles Historical Society. There are 39 gowns in the collection.
From 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, the house will display gowns not seen for over 45 years.
Included are the inaugural gowns worn by Jackie Kennedy, Louisa Johnson Adams (John Quincy Adams), Lucy Webb Hayes, Ellen Axon Wilson (first wife of Woodrow Wilson) and Julia Dent Grant.
This presentation will not be available after Oct. 16, due to preparation of the Ward-Thomas House for McKinley Christmas.
TALK ON BOOKS: The American Association of University Women Warren-Trumbull will meet 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library for a tour of renovations with Director Jim Wilkins and a talk, “Banned Books,” with Alyse McMullen, manager of the adult services department. A business meeting will follow.
