Hubbard VFW fundraiser Friday
POPPY DISTRIBUTION: Hubbard VFW Post 3767 and its auxiliary will distribute poppies 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Devine’s Shop and Save, Handyman Hardware, Save A Lot, and Dollar General in the McConnell Plaza. The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance. Donations help support VFW state and national service programs, veterans relief funds, rehabilitation programs and the National Home for Children.
CORTLAND MEMORIAL: A Memorial Day observance will be 2 p.m. today at the Cortland Veterans Memorial. The service will honor those who have served the nation and are protecting the country.
FUNDRAISER: Citizens for Hubbard Volunteer Fire Department will host a fundraiser 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Gentry in Hubbard. All proceeds benefit the Hubbard Volunteer Fire Department to purchase equipment that may not be able to be acquired through grants or other funding. The fundraising will focus on purchasing a Lucas CPR device, which is used on cardiac-arrest patients. To donate baskets for the raffle, call Diana at 330-219-4883.
FOOD PANTRY: The Hubbard Food Pantry inside the First Baptist Church helps supply the local community with food items. Hubbard Christians in Action, which is a ministry of many churches, comes together to help those in need in the community. The pantry will be open 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. Friday for those who live in Hubbard.
CAMPUS OPENS: The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will open its Logan Campus for the summer Saturday. The outdoor pool and area, 3245 Logan Way, Liberty, offers a variety of options, including sand volleyball, tennis and basketball courts and an outdoor pool. Family nights and adult nights will return this year. New this year will be trivia nights. Membership with JCC includes both the Logan campus and the main campus.
MASTER GARDENERS: Trumbull County Master Gardener Wanda Thomas will host a program 6 p.m. Thursday at the Girard Free Library. She will share some tips and tricks to work more efficiently and create a fuss-free garden. To register, call the circulation desk at 330-545-2508.
RUMMAGE SALE: Orwell United Methodist Church, 80 S. Maple Road, Orwell, is holding a rummage sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2 and 3, and 9 a.m. to noon June 4 (bag day). Large items and housewares are located outside the church and clothing, books, DVDs and puzzles are inside.
MARVEL UNIVERSE: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host “Marvel Universe: Origin Stories” 6 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Birthplace Home, 40 S. Main St. Greg Bartholomew of All American Cards and Comics will discuss the history of some of the Marvel characters and examine their lasting impact on pop culture. HOST FAMILIES FOR ISE: International Student Exchange (ISE) is searching for host families to host students for the upcoming school year. The children are ages 14 to 17 years old and come from many countries. The host families will work with the ISE representative to find which child fits their family best. The children would attend a local school that the host families would decide.
