Spread season’s cheer at Howland Christmas event

HOWLAND TREE LIGHTING: The Howland Township holiday tree-lighting festival will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at the gazebo off East Market Street. Activities at 4 p.m. include ornament making, cookie decorating, a visit from the Grinch, a food truck and refreshments. Warren Civic Chorus children’s choir will perform at 4:15 p.m., and Santa will pay a visit for the tree lighting at 5:30 p.m.

GIRARD CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS: The Girard School Parent Teacher Organization and Girard city will sponsor a tree lighting ceremony and parade 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday on State Street across from Farmer’s National Bank. There will be games and treats. The parade will begin at Boardman Medical Supply parking lot, across State Street, down Liberty Street, across Market Street, and end at the municipal building parking lot for the tree lighting.

CHARITY EVENT: The Cortland Masonic Lodge will host a charity fundraiser 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 3263 Everett Hull Road. The event will benefit Boy Scout Troop 4075 of Bristolville. The lodge hosts a charity fundraiser breakfast event the first Saturday of each month to benefit a local organization or charity, Over the past 18 months, the lodge has donated nearly $12,000 as a direct result of the community attending and supporting their events.

MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS: The Mesopotamia Memorial and Historical Association, 8788 state Route 534, will present “The Magic of Christmas” 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends in December starting Saturday. On Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. will be a performance by the String Band Quartet. There will be a themed Christmas tree display. Raffle tickets for trees are $1 each or six for $5.

HANUKKAH CELEBRATION: A community Hanukkah celebration will be 4 p.m. Dec. 5 at Congregation Rodef Shalom, 1119 Elm St., Youngstown.

CHRISTMAS SIGN-UPS: The Emmanuel Community Care Center, 2 N. State St., Girard, is seeking sign-ups for Christmas through Friday. Families who are registered at the center can call 330-545-4301 and register their child up to age 12. Families can suggest gift ideas for their children. Donations of gift cards to Aldi’s, Walmart and Giant Eagle and monetary donations will be accepted through Dec. 10.

VISIT WITH SANTA: Santa Claus will visit with children 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at VFW Post 3332, 433 Arlington Blvd., Newton Falls.
