OKTOBERFEST: Mahoning County District St. Vincent de Paul Society presents Oktoberfest 2 to 7 p.m. today at St. Christine Social Hall, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown. There will be authentic German food, locally brewed beer, a 50-50 raffle and a basket raffle. Tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are $25 each, which includes a meal and three beer tickets.

NEW PASTOR: Faith Fellowship Church of God, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown, welcomed its new pastor and his wife, the Rev. Steve and Melissa Turner, in February. They will be recognized 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

They have worked with new families, have restarted Wednesday evening weekly Bible studies, a women’s monthly meeting, a men’s monthly meeting and programs for children.

LABYRINTH WALK: The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, 4280 Shields Road, is offering its final guided labyrinth walk of the season 2 p.m. Sunday. The theme is “Respecting Creation.”

This year’s overarching theme is respect, a virtue central to the ministries of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. They began their work in the Mahoning Valley in 1874.

All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take about a half hour. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk.

There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides provided at the labyrinth’s entrance give suggestions for following the path. Visit theursulinecenter.org.

PET BLESSING: St. James Episcopal Church in Boardman will hold a Blessing of the Pets at noon Sunday. Animals are to be kept leashed or in a crate.

Supplies also will be collected for local rescue organizations, including towels, guinea pig and gerbil food, and old newspapers.

CHURCH PROJECT: Wildare United Methodist Church, 7211 N. Park Ave., Champion, will pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in family life center.

Church members donated hundreds of items to fill shoe boxes to be sent around the world for Operation Christmas Child, part of Samaritan’s Purse missions.

Individual boxes can be tracked to see to which country and region they go.

CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY: Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services of the Diocese of Youngstown will offer The Chaplet of Divine Mercy at all four cemeteries 3 p.m. every Friday. The Chaplet will be said at alternating cemeteries.

The first Friday of the month will be at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown; the second Friday at Resurrection Cemetery, Austintown; the third Friday at All Souls Cemetery, Cortland; and the fourth Friday at Calvary Cemetery, Massillon.

JOINT FELLOWSHIP: Greater Apostolic Faith, 3571 Tod Ave. NW, Warren, will host a joint fellowship worship service 7 p.m. Wednesday. Guest is Pastor George Austin of King of Kings Fellowship of Warren.

FALL FESTIVAL: Pleasant Valley Church, 2055 Pleasant Valley Road, Liberty, will host a fall festival 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23. The event will include food trucks, hay rides, music, a prayer tent, a bounce house and a pumpkin patch.

Special guests will include Christian illusionist Joseph Young, and evangelist Carmine Azzato, a former pro wrestler.

FAIR CANCELED: Churchill United Methodist Church in Liberty has canceled its children’s fair set for Oct. 23.

COVID-19 MEMORIAL: A COVID-19 memorial prayer service will be 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at Calvary Cemetery, 248 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. Celebrant will be Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown.

There will be honors for loved ones, family, friends and veterans who were lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be a blessing and dedication of a COVID-19 memorial bench and a wreath-laying ceremony.

The event is sponsored by Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services, a ministry of the Diocese of Youngstown.

TRUNK OR TREAT: Girard Ministerial Association is holding Trunk or Treat 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Churchill Road, Girard. The outdoor event will include candy distribution, live music, free food and games.

In case of bad weather, the event will be canceled.

TENT REVIVAL: Delightful Evangelical Church, 2473 Barclay Messerly Road, Southington, will host an old-fashioned tent revival 6:30 p.m. nightly Oct. 24 to 27. The event will include a sawdust trail, music and preaching by the Rev. Dan Myers, a United Methodist pastor from western Pennsylvania. There will be a picnic 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27.

GUEST BISHOP: The Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson welcomed Bishop Athanasius Schneider, the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese Mary Most Holy of Astana Kazakhstan, who celebrated Misa Cantana in the traditional Latin Rite. The sung Mass is a form of the traditional Latin Mass.

Schneider is the general secretary of the Bishop’s Conference of Kazakhstan.

RETIREMENT: Champion Christian Church will mark the retirement of its longtime pastor, the Rev. Kenneth E. Hopkins Jr., as he concludes a 40-year career in ministry and community service.

A worship service recognizing his dedication to the church and the community is set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 31 at the church, 151 Center St. West. A reception will follow.

Hopkins has served Champion Christian Church as pastor for 26 years. Under his leadership, the church celebrated 125 years in 2018 with the opening of the Disciple Center to accommodate several ministry and community groups, including its youth group.

50TH ANNIVERSARY: The Rev. Eugene A Koene, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Warren, is observing the 50th anniversary of his ordination with a service 10 a.m. Oct. 31.

In 2013, Koene accepted a call to a team ministry with Hope Lutheran Parish, a coalition of four churches in Trumbull County. He accepted the call to Emmanuel Lutheran Church and was installed in June 2018.

TORAH STUDIES FOR CHRISTIANS: Torah Studies for Christians virtual series will present “Two Torahs: Written and Oral” 7 p.m. Nov. 3 held via Zoom.

The event is co-sponsored by Rabbi Joseph Schonberger, spiritual leader of Temple El Emeth, Liberty. A freewill offering will be accepted. Registration is not required.

MEDIA INTEGRATION: As part of an integrated media and communications strategy, Bishop David J. Bonnar of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, and the Rev. James Korda, president of Catholic Telecommunications Network of Youngstown, will consolidate diocesan audio and video media operations at the Diocese’s central offices in Youngstown.

This will include a new studio and offices for video and audio programming, replacing current studios at CTNY in Canfield. Resources and personnel from the current CTNY studios will be moved to Youngstown and used to support an emphasis on digital and social media delivery, in addition to continuing to produce programs and diocesan event coverage available in partnership with local media stations.

Ecumenical Television Channel, produced by CTNY, will cease operations by June 30, 2022, in coordination with cable companies.

ETC began in 1983, and became a full-time station in 1986, as a collaboration among CTNY and various ecumenical and interfaith partners.

CTNY was created in 1980, and has won 46 awards for programs related to adult faith formation, diocesan events and critical social issues.

Mass for shut-ins now will be produced from St. Columba Cathedral. In addition to digital streaming at www.doy.org, it will continue to be available via local media.
