Dogs, games and fun happen today

MECCA COMMUNITY DAY: Mecca Township will celebrate with a Community Day starting at 6 p.m. today at the township park, south of the center on state Route 46. The free event will include a canine demonstration at 6 p.m. from the Mecca Search and Rescue canine team, children’s games from 7 to 9 p.m., including an obstacle course, football throws, duck pond and others. Music by Danny G. from 8 to 9 p.m. and then showing of the movie “Cars” at 9:15 p.m. People coming to see the movie are asked to take lawn chairs and blankets. There will be glow sticks for the children. The Mecca Community Church will hold a backpack and school supply giveaway with one per child while supplies last. There will be firetrucks and other vehicles. There also will be a basket raffle to support Mecca Park, a 50/50 to support Maplewood volleyball and snow cones being sold to support Maplewood boy’s soccer.

NEW OFFICES: The Trumbull County MetroParks will host the grand opening of its new office at 3983 N. River Road, NE Howland, on Saturday. There will be a ribbon cutting at 1:45 p.m. followed by an open house 2 to 4 p.m. There also will be free ice cream and music provided by the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District.

BENEFIT TO HELP BOY: A benefit to help Jace Chitwood, 10, who is in need of a liver transplant due to cancer, will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Newton Falls village hall. All proceeds will go to expenses in the coming months. There will be a dinner, raffle and 50-50 raffle. Winners do not have to be present. For information, call 330-646-0411.

WARD THOMAS HOUSE: The Niles Historical Society will host an open house of the Ward Thomas House on Brown Street, 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Last tour of the house will be at 4 p.m. The society will hold its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Aug. 7 at the Westenfeld Room.

VOLUNTEER COUNCIL TO MEET: The Community Volunteer Council is hosting its annual breakfast event 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Demetrios pavilion, 3223 Atlantic St. NE, Warren. Guest speaker is Dr. Shauna Moore Reynolds, a Warren native, who has offices in Burtonsville and Clinton, Md. For information, call 330-395-5888 or 330-307-3661.
