State recognizes performance

GIRARD — A special presentation was made Tuesday to Girard Intermediate School, which once again has received the state Momentum Award for high student performance on state tests and the state report card.

Sarah Fowler of the Ohio Department of Education presented the banners and awards to school officials, noting Girard Intermediate School was among 12 local schools of 173 schools statewide to earn the recognition.

The Momentum Award notes a district exceeded expectations in student growth for the year. It was given to 48 districts and 173 schools for 2019.

Girard Intermediate School also received an Overall A Award recognition.

Fowler said to get the award, the school must earn straight As on all value-added measures on the report card. The school or district must have at least two value-added subgroups of students, which includes gifted, lowest 20 percent in achievement and students with disabilities.

Local schools receiving the Momentum Award for 2019 include Austintown Middle School, Beaver Local Middle School, C.H. Campbell Elementary, Campbell Elementary, Austintown Fitch High School, Hubbard Elementary School, Jackson-Milton Middle School, Lakeview Middle School, Newton Falls Middle School, Southeast Elementary School and West Branch Elementary School

Girard Intermediate School has received the Momentum Award from the State Board of Education for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 years.
