Student art showcased at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN — Students from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties were honored for their artistic talents at the annual Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards Show.

Their work is showcased in Bliss Hall at Youngstown State University.

Hubbard High School art teacher Josh MacMillan, one of the event’s organizers, said the artwork shows the talents of students in seventh to 12th grades, with gold key winners competing at the national level.

There were more than 600 individual entries to the local show.

In addition to the gold key, there are silver key winners and special American Vision Awards were given.

Jackie Huang, 18, a senior at Austintown Fitch High School, said he has always taken part in art in school and was surprised when he was one of five of the entries to receive the American Vision Award.

“I was shocked to receive that award. I never expected it,” Huang said.

Jason Calderwood, 17, a senior at LaBrae High School, submitted a short video as a public service announcement on autism.

“When I received the award it took me a month to process it. In my video class one of my assignments required a video with stop motion and animation,” Calderwood said.

Meghan Halverson of Warren said she was impressed by the variety of work including that of her relative LaurieAnn Jewell, a senior at Niles McKinley High School. Jewell had received several silver awards in recent years.

Mineral Ridge High School art teacher Julie Edwards said she had several students in her class receive awards, including Alexa Harkins, a gold key winner, and Dakota Edwards, a silver key winner.

“This really acknowledges the hard work of the students and their talent,” she said.

The American Vision Award and gold key finalists will be sent to New York City where they will compete against entries from around the country for scholarships.

The exhibit will be on display through Wednesday.
