Cancer survivor strives for warmth

TEACHER COLLECTING HATS: Jessica Gardner, a teacher at Brookfield High School, is collecting warm hats for cancer patients during the month of November. Gardner is a breast cancer survivor and made it her mission to keep cancer patients warm this winter. She will donate the hats to five local cancer centers including; The Hope Center for Cancer Care in Howland, the Joanie Abdu Breast Center in Youngstown, and Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman. The Brookfield Middle School Student Council is helping out with the cause and collecting hats for Gardner to donate. As of right now, nearly 200 hats have been collected and almost $500 has been raised to purchase additional hats for donation. Gardner and BMS Student Council are collecting hats until Nov. 25. The hats will be donated to the cancer centers during Thanksgiving break.

HOLIDAYS IN HARTFORD: Holidays in Hartford will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at state Routes 7 and 305 at fire department and businesses and churches near the center. The event is a day of country shopping with a variety of crafters, small businesses and baked goods. Santa Claus will visit 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Boy Scouts will serve lunch.

THANKSGIVING AT CENTER: Girard Multigenerational Center will hold a Thanksgiving luncheon noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the gymnasium. Those attending are asked to bring a favorite dish. For reservations, call 330-545-6596.

GINGERBREAD HOUSES: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will hold a gingerbread house contest with entries accepted Nov. 25 to Dec. 7. Entries will be displayed at the library through Jan. 2. Participants cam build a gingerbread building or train. Information is available at library registration desk.

CRAFTS FOR KIDS: The Howland Library Branch will hold Caring Kids Craft 6 p.m. Tuesday for ages 5 to 12. Give back to our community by making a craft that will be donated to a local organization. Registration is required by calling 330-856-2011.
