Quaker Steak honors veterans

PATRIOT DAY: Austintown Quaker Steak and Lube, 5800 Patriot Blvd., will hold the 13th annual Patriot Day 6 p.m. Thursday. Area military personnel and veterans will be recognized during a tribute ceremony. Military members in uniform or with valid identification will receive 20-percent off their meals.

There will be military vehicles on display. Austintown Trustee Ken Carano will be the master of ceremonies. Six-time U.S. Accuracy champion and Youngstown battalion Chief Jim Drummond will land by parachute in the parking lot. Thirteen military personnel from the tri-county area will be honored. The Patriotism Award will be presented.

ENGLISH CENTER: The English Center of Youngstown will hold an open registration and orientation for adult English language learners 9:30 a.m. today at the center across from Wick Park, at the corner of Woodbine and Elm streets.

Classes are held in the basement of Rodef Shalom Temple, 119 Elm St. All adults speakers of other languages are welcome. The center is an independent nonprofit organization. The registration event kicks off the fundraising campaign for 2019-20.

SOCIETY OPEN HOUSE: The Mineral Ridge Historical Society is hosting an open house of the Moss Ancestral Home 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at 1499 Burnett St., Mineral Ridge.

CHILI COOKOFF: Local marathon runner Kason Bowman Sr. is arranging a chili cookoff to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The cookoff will be noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 608 N. Crandon Ave., Niles. There will be several chili categories in which votes will be taken. Entry fee is $25. For tickets, call Susan at 330-646-121.

Bowman will run in the New York Marathon to raise money and awareness for St. Jude’s.

FOOD DRIVE: Throughout September and October, the Girard Multi-Generational Center will hold a food drive, with all proceeds to benefit the Emmanuel Care Center in Girard to help those in the community. Nonperishable food items will be collected.

HEALTHY SOIL: Howland Library Branch will hold “Healthy Soil Healthy You” 6 p.m. today. Charlie Sager, a Master Gardener with Ohio State University Extension’s Trumbull County location, will lead a discussion explaining how you can create quality soil and the healthy benefits it will yield. Registration, though not required, is requested.
