Police departments team up to help LaBrae district

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES: The Braceville and Warren Township police departments are teaming up to help LaBrae Local Schools with Stuff the Police Cruiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Dollar General parking lots off Mahoning Avenue and state Route 5.

The public can help stuff the cruiser with school supplies for children and families in need in the district.

AUTHOR TO SPEAK: Author Annie Harley, 18, will talk to teens about writing and self-publishing 6 p.m. today at the Girard Free Library.

Harley, a 2019 Girard graduate, will recount her journey of self-publishing two books during high school.

The event is for teens ages 12 to 18. Refreshments will be provided.

Harley is also organizing a showcase of the writing of youth in Youngstown and its surrounding suburbs. Submissions of flash-fiction, poetry and short stories are being accepted through Harley’s website, www.annieharley.com. Pieces are accepted from writers in grades K-12.

TALK WITH TRUSTEES: Brookfield Township trustees will host “Talk with a Trustee” 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the center green off state Route 7. Residents can ask trustees questions and share concerns.

SPARTAN CHALLENGE: The annual Spartan Challenge for children ages 14 and younger will begin 11 a.m. Aug. 15 at Woodland Park. Children will compete in various running, agility and throwing skills events.

Registration begins 10:30 a.m. at the Ramsay Pavilion. Following the event, there will be an awards ceremony and picnic.

Cost is $7 per child and includes a T-shirt.

BLOCKWATCH TO MEET:The Girard 4th Ward blockwatch will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday at Girard Multigenerational Center, Trumbull Avenue. The center will also hold a cookie decorating program 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

SCHOLARSHIP EVENT: The Hispanic American Civic and Cultural Organization Inc. will host the annual scholarship event 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the OCCHA social hall, 3660 Shirley Road, Youngstown. This year $7,500 in scholarships will be presented to 13 area seniors.

KNITTING PROGRAM: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host Knit One, Crochet Too 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Those attending can bring their own projects and enjoy spending time with others who enjoy working with yarn.
