Rotary names Citizen of the Year

NILES — When she was attending Niles McKinley High School, Becky Thomas volunteered to be the Red Dragons’ mascot.

Over the years, Thomas has continued to be a community volunteer by helping at the Niles Relay For Life and organizing the Niles Halloween Parade by serving on the planning committee for 15 years.

For her service, the Niles Rotary Club named her the 2019 Citizen of the Year. She also was recognized by Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz with a proclamation.

Thomas also has volunteered to coach softball, been active with Avenue and Main, Salvation Army and Niles Community Services.

“This is what I love to do. I don’t do this for the recognition but to help the community. I tell my family and friends the importance of volunteering,” she said, noting she was humbled and honored to be recognized.

Rotary President Steve Simunich said he has known Thomas through her involvement with Junior Achievement and noted she has continued to be active in so many ways in the community for many years.
