Diocese to conclude 75th-year observance

YOUNGSTOWN — The Roman Catholic community is invited to the closing Mass celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Youngstown and also the 40th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Bishop George V. Murry

The two milestone events will be held 4 p.m. Sunday on the Solemnity of Pentecost at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., Youngstown.

The Diocese began its yearlong celebration in May 2018.

The kickoff Mass was the first of a series of events with the theme, “With Pride in the Past, and Faith in the Future.”

The educational component of the celebration included a traveling display of the history of the Diocese, historical videos of the Diocese and cathedral produced by the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown and a lecture series about the history of the Diocese.

Among the speakers who spoke at different venues during the year were Ursuline Sister Regina Rogers on “The History, Role, Contributions and Future of Religious Communities of Women in the Diocese of Youngstown” and Dr. Hosffman Ospino, professor of Theology and Religious Education at Boston College, on “What Does it Mean to be Catholic Today?” and “Effective Leadership and Ministry in Today’s Diverse Church.”

Monsignor John Zuraw, chancellor and chair of the anniversary planning committee, has said people should take pride in this historic milestone and the accomplishments of those who laid and built the foundation of faith.

The Ecumenical Television Channel (Spectrum Cable Channel 13 in Trumbull County) will broadcast the closing Mass 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday, noon Wednesday and 10 a.m. Friday.
