Sorority set to celebrate 70th anniversary

HOWLAND — The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated graduate chapter, Epsilon Mu Omega, is hosting its 70th Founders’ Day anniversary event Friday and Saturday at the Avalon Inn Resort and Hotel in Warren.

The theme of the weekend event is “Serving Our Legacy with Faith over Fear.”

An evening Meet and Greet and panel discussion is planned 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Madonna Chism-Pinkard, director of community relations for WFMJ / WCBC, will serve as moderator.

First Lady Michelle Witherspoon (special guest speaker), Dr. Joan L. Boyd, Jack & Jill of America Inc. Youngstown Chapter teen Gabrielle Blake and honoree Autumn Jones are participating panelists. The cost of the Friday event is $20, which includes appetizers and desserts.

A celebratory luncheon will be 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with special presentation of an Alpha Kappa Alpha-Epsilon Mu Omega History Museum, music selections by Jo Washington and Company, and awards presentation.

First Lady Witherspoon, a spiritual and motivational speaker at Kingdom Life Christian Church in Sewell, New Jersey, will do the keynote presentation to inspire, motivate and uplift.

The sorority will honor individuals in the community who have exemplified putting faith over their fears with the “Faith Over Fear Inspiring Character” Award. Nominees who will receive an award are Reverend Jeannette Hubbard, Denise Johnson, Autumn Jones, Toni Mitchell and Janiene R. Taylor. The cost of the Saturday event is $35.

Committee members are: Dr. Joan L. Boyd, Chairman Emeritus, Gabrielle Boyd-Blake, Mary Lois Gross, Evelyn Fisher and Madonna Chism-Pinkard.
