Brookfield receives backing on zoning

BROOKFIELD — With an effort by residents and township officials to get a zoning resolution passed in November, trustees also have received letters of support from local organizations, businesses and individuals.

Trustees said at Monday’s meeting they have received letters from Eastgate Council of Governments, Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce, Trumbull County Planning Commission, William Strimbu, Cafaro Investment Trust LLC, and Thompson Insurance Group showing support for zoning.

A zoning committee was formed earlier this year to help promote the need for passage of the issue.

Attempts to get a zoning resolution passed in previous elections has been defeated by voters. Last November, the issue was defeated by 19 votes with 50.44 percent against to 49.56 percent for, according to results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

Trustees said two required public hearings were held on the matter.

Trustee Chairman Ron Haun said trustees have heard support and opposition to the issue. He said the committee is trying to let residents know the zoning issue would allow officials to identify the best manner for regulated property and land utilization in the township.

Brookfield, Mecca and Mesopotamia are the only three townships in Trumbull County without zoning in place, officials said.

The establishment of zoning was recommended in a recently completed comprehensive plan for the township done by Thrasher Engineering. Offiicals said having zoning will help attract new businesses and development and also regulate such businesses as marijuana farms. If passed, township code enforcement officer Jimmy Ewing would be named zoning officer.
