ALLEMAN WINS COMPETITION: Sophia Alleman, a Youngstown resident and sixth-grade student at St. Rose School in Girard, won first place April 1 in the Regional History Day Contest at Youngstown State University. She then took top honors again in the Ohio History Day competition April 29 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The win qualifies Sophia to compete at National History Day this June at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md., in the junior individual performance category.

The theme for this year’s contest is “Taking a Stand in History.” Sophia’s performance is titled “Nellie Bly: A Life Dedicated to Taking a Stand for Equality and Social Reform.”
