PARKEY RETIRES AS MASTER SERGEANT: Leslie Parkey, son of the late Willie and Dorothy Parkey, formerly of Warren, will retire this month from the U.S. military.

Born and raised in Warren, Parkey graduated from Warren G. Harding High School. In 1981, while still in high school, Parkey signed with the Air Force and did 10 years active duty from 1981 to 1991. In 1991, he became a reservist in Vienna and also worked for General Refactories. He also worked a short period at Packard.

In 1995, Parkey became a full-time reservist as an aircraft mechanic at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Along the way, he accumulated many ribbons and was promoted to master sergeant. He also is a member of the 910th Airlift Wing Honor Guard and has done numerous parades in Warren.

Parkey was honored recently as a Hometown Hero at the Scrappers game on the Fourth of July. Parkey also was a semi-professional football player in England and was a professional boxer in the states.

Parkey married Terri in 2010.

GRADUATE MAKES OFFICER: Second Lt. Caleb C. Johnson, son of Shelley and Eric Johnson of Braceville, graduated at his current rank from Officer Candidates School at the U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., on Aug. 6.

AIRMAN GRADUATES: Air Force Airman David A. Phillips, a 2003 graduate of Hubbard High School, graduated from the Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer Academy.

During the six-week course, the student received professional-level preparation to take on increased responsibility and a greater leadership role as a non-commissioned officer. Coursework emphasized supervisory skills and ways to be an effective mentor.

The husband of J-Kim Phillips, the airman earned a master’s degree in 2015 from Keller University, Dayton.
