Mixed report on state unemployment

The state reported 1,000 fewer unemployed workers in June compared to the prior month, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Friday.

However, the number of unemployed increased by 41,000 from June 2024 (252,000) to June 2025 (293,000). Ohio’s June unemployment rate increased 0.6 percentage points from 4.3% in June 2024.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 4.9% compared to the national rate of 4.1%.

In June 2025, the labor force participation rate in Ohio was 62.7%, unchanged from May 2025 and up from 62.4% in June 2024. The state’s labor force totalled approximately 6 million workers, according to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Nationwide, that number is approximately 170 million.

During the same period, the national labor force participation rate was 62.3%, down from 62.4% in May 2025 and down from 62.6% in June 2024.
