Events set on Lordstown Energy Center permit request

LORDSTOWN — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency scheduled a virtual information session 6 p.m. Jan. 13 to discuss a permit request by Lordstown Energy Center to discharge processed wastewater into Mud Creek.

Staff will give a presentation and answer questions during the session. An in-person public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 19 at the village’s municipal building, 1455 Salt Springs Road. At this meeting, the Ohio EPA will accept comments on the record regarding the draft permit.

Lordstown Energy Center is proposing to build a retention pond and pipeline to discharge the wastewater, generated from making power, into Mud Creek near Hallock Young Road. By doing so, Lordstown Energy Center would divert much of the wastewater from the plant away from the village’s collection and transportation system for treatment by Warren.

At the heart of the energy center’s proposal are usage fees that LEC states increased 118 percent in May 2019.

Participants who want handouts for the Jan. 13 session should email paula.payne@epa.ohio.gov for an electronic copy that will be emailed the day of the meeting. Those participating in the session should register at least 15 minutes before the meeting begins to ensure connectivity. Registration is available online at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3627195820369339660.

Written comments may be submitted during the public hearing or emailed to epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov. All comments received at the hearing or via email by 5 p.m. Jan. 26 will be considered by the Ohio EPA prior to final action on this proposal. Comments submitted by email should include the project name, Lordstown Energy Center, or the identification number, 3IN00407*AD.
