Port authority retains two of its top officials

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — The Western Reserve Port Authority has given new contracts to two of its top officials as it starts on a more than yearlong executive leadership transition.

Executive director John Moliterno was awarded a new 14-month contract with the title of chief executive officer and Anthony Trevena, director of economic development, was given a new three-year contract that makes him chief operating officer.

The moves were made to prepare for Moliterno’s expected retirement in early 2022.

“This gives us a little bit over a year to get through the transition,” said port authority board president Marty Loney. “Both John and Anthony have done wonderful jobs for the port in all of their capacities quite frankly, but this makes it easier for us to look at the transitional period.”

Loney and Moliterno said the intent is to involve Trevena in other aspects of the port authority, including aviation- and budget-related matters, over the next 14 months.

The port authority oversees the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna. The agency’s economic development arm works to secure projects in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

For Moliterno, he said, “I will continue with all of the responsibilities I have now.”

Both men have been working under 30-day contracts over recent months, according to Loney, which were done because of uncertainty surrounding funding impacted by the viral outbreak. The port authority is largely funded by bed taxes from Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

Moliterno was named the port authority’s interim director in 2014 and was made permanent in 2015, the same year Trevena was brought on. Trevena also had been a finalist for the director’s job.

The new agreements approved Wednesday pay Moliterno $126,000 a year and Trevena, $110,000 a year.
