Wagering up in August at Austintown racino
AUSTINTOWN — Wagering on video lottery terminals at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course rose slightly in August as it and the six other racinos in the state try to rebound from losses brought on by the viral pandemic.
Bettors at the Austintown racino wagered $117.4 million last month, enough to eclipse July and even August 2019, which recorded $113.4 million in wagers, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission.
The commission oversees video lottery terminals, or VLTs, in Ohio.
The wagers last month were about $1.5 million more than in July, which recorded $115.9 million, and $3.9 million more than one year ago.
Last month, credits won were $104.5 million, down about $1.4 million from July, and the facility reported a net win of $11.2 million, down a modest $46,000 from July.
The percent payout was 90.4 and the win / VLT per day was $323, down $2 from July. An average of 1,222 VLTs were on the gaming floor, the same as in July.
In comparison, the racino in August 2019 reported $100.5 million credits won and a net win of $11 million. The percent payout was 90.2, there was an average 1,098 VLTS on the floor, and win / VLT was $324.
Of the net winnings last month, $7.4 million went to the racino operator, Wyomissing, Pa.-based Penn National Gaming Inc., $3.7 million to the lottery commission and $37,387 to support programs that provide gambling addiction and related services.
Shutdowns March 14 to June 18 resulted in wagering to slump $2.5 billion for the racino’s year, which ended in June. A bounce back that started in July continued into August, according to numbers reported by the commission.
Last month wagering rose above $1 billion, the first time since February. In March, wagering fell by more than one half to $448.7 million
In August, bettors won $901.2 million credits, up from $878 million in July, and the racinos posted a net win of $94.7 million, down from $95 million the prior month. The percent payout was 90.6 with a win / VLT per day of $274, down $1 from July. An average of 11,168 machines were in play, down from 11,231 in July.
In August 2019, bettors wagered more than $1 billion and won $926.4 million with the racinos reporting a net win of $92.9 million. There was a 91 percent payout with an average 11,609 machines on the gaming floors. The win / VLT per day was $258.
Last month, $62.7 million was given to operators, $31.7 million to the lottery commission and $315,095 to problem gambling services.
