CHAMBER EMPLOYEE EARNS CREDENTIAL: Lauren Johnson, manager of the 422 Project and Business Development at the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber, has completed the coursework through the Ohio Economic Development Institute to earn the Ohio Certified Economic Developer (Ohio CED) credential.

Over the past two years, Johnson completed the basic economic development course, as well as training related to real estate development, site selection and development, finance and incentives, and business retention and expansion. The training concluded with a yearlong capstone project, presentation and exam.

Johnson’s capstone project was the creation of an investment prospectus for the Valley’s 15 designated Opportunity Zones. That prospectus was launched publicly Aug. 5.

FARMERS MAKES BEST EMPLOYERS LIST: Canfield-based Farmers National Bank was recently named one of the best employers in Ohio in 2019, according to an annual list of best employers by the Ohio Society of Human Resource Management State Council, Crain’s Cleveland Business and Best Companies Group.

Forty-one companies were given the distinction this year.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part survey process for the award. The first part evaluated the company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part was an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This was worth 75 percent of the evaluation.

CHAMBER SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR BUSINESS AWARD: The Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber and MAGNET are again partnering to recognize a local manufacturer with the chamber’s third annual Excellence in Manufacturing Award.

Nominations are being accepted for the award, which focuses on a company’s longevity in business, growth, product innovation and achievement.

Nominated manufacturers must be located in Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties and be a member of the regional chamber. Candidates may self-nominate. Nominations are due by Sept. 30. The award will be presented at the chamber’s economic forecast breakfast Nov. 13 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

KSU ASHTABULA TO LAUNCH HYBRID PROGRAM: Kent State University at Ashtabula has announced the launch of a hybrid program in the occupational therapy assistant (OTA) technology program that combines online learning with on-campus laboratory sessions. The new model will begin in summer 2020.

Under the new format students can complete traditional lecture content, classwork, study and lab prep off-site at home or elsewhere. Students spend one day per week on campus for lab work. A Saturday lab option will be offered.

There are no changes to the course curriculum or the field work / clinical experience and requirements. The first and only program of this kind in Ohio will deliver 65 percent to 70 percent of the curriculum online.

HOSPITAL ADDS CHEST SURGEON: Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Steward Medical Group have added board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon Randy K. Metcalf, MD, to Steward Health Care System.

His clinical interests include aortic root reconstruction, coronary revascularization and mitral valve repairs. By joining Steward Medical Group, Dr. Metcalf is now affiliated with Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren and Sharon Regional Medical Center in Sharon, Pa.

He completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Harvard University / New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Colorado in Denver.

GIBSON WELCOMES RISK MANAGER: Gibson Insurance Agency in Girard recently hired Leslie Sams as personal risk manager. In the position Sams, who has more than 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, will help existing and new clients with their personal insurance policies.
